David Archuleta first drew widespread attention in 2008 through his second-place showing on American Idol, where his clear tenor and youthful appeal connected with audiences drawn to adult-contemporary pop. After the competition, he issued several well-received solo projects, among them the gold-certified David Archuleta that reached number two on the Billboard 200; The Other Side of Down later entered the Top 20. He then paused his career for a two-year missionary assignment with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints before unveiling a more developed style on the 2017 album Postcards in the Sky.

Although his birthplace was Miami, Florida in 1990, Archuleta grew up primarily in Utah alongside his parents—jazz trumpeter Jeff and Honduran salsa singer Lupe Marie—and four siblings. A videotaped staging of Les Misérables sparked his interest in singing at age six, leading to early appearances at the Utah Talent Competition, on The Jenny Jones Show, and on Star Search, where he earned the title of Junior Vocal Champion in 2003.

Archuleta tried out for the seventh season of American Idol in 2007, impressing the judges immediately with his interpretation of John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change.” He progressed through the semi-finals and remained for the full run, offering heartfelt readings of pop ballads such as “Another Day in Paradise” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” As the youngest contestant at 17, he finished runner-up to David Cook. The debut single “Crush” from his self-titled album entered at number two that summer, and David Archuleta arrived in full that November; the project earned gold status within months. During the first half of 2009 he toured Britain with McFly and the United States with Demi Lovato, then completed the holiday set Christmas from the Heart later in the year.

Seeking a follow-up to his 2008 debut, Archuleta broadened his approach by working with producers including S*A*M & Sluggo on the buoyant lead single “Something ’Bout Love.” The resulting album The Other Side of Down appeared in October 2010. In 2012 he began a two-year religious mission in Chile, during which earlier recordings surfaced: the Philippines-only collection Forevermore and the covers album BEGIN., which featured the new track “Broken” co-written by Archuleta. In spring 2013, Forevermore was reissued in the United States as No Matter How Far.

Once the mission ended, Archuleta returned to Utah in early 2014 and launched a tour. Subsequent years brought standalone singles such as “Nunca Pense” and “Glorious.” He resurfaced in 2017 with an EP containing “Numb” and “Up All Night,” both of which featured on the October album Postcards in the Sky. His second holiday collection, Winter in the Air, followed in 2018 and included the single “Christmas Every Day.”
