A singer from southern California named David Lasley put out a total of three albums throughout his career. One of them, Soldiers on the Moon, came out toward the end of 1990 via the little-known Agenda label and marked his return after a seven-year absence from recording. Long unavailable were the pair of EMI releases he had made earlier, Missing Twenty Grand along with Raindance. Motown influences, reflecting his Detroit origins, shaped the approach of this vocally gifted performer whose range extended high and whose technique knew no equal, yet what distinguished his output was the particular warmth arising from a fusion of theatrical flair and guileless charm. The year 1982 saw the appearance of Twenty Grand, which included the forthright gay-themed statement "Looking for Love on Broadway." Subsequent recordings avoided specifying gender. Although he provided support for artists such as Luther Vandross, Roxy Music, and James Taylor, Lasley possessed remarkable ability as a solo performer. On December 9, 2021, David Lasley passed away at seventy-four years old.
