Biography
Denney and the Jets sprang from the imagination of singer-guitarist Chris Denney, a Nashville, Tennessee native whose early years included a pronounced taste for tobacco, marijuana, and pain pills taken from his grandmother by the age of thirteen. He channeled accounts of those unruly experiences into songs starting in 2008, then launched the band’s first lineup the following year by enlisting Wes Traylor on bass along with Jake Orrall on guitar and Jamin Orrall on drums. Traylor soon departed to join other acts, most prominently Natural Child, while the Orrall brothers concentrated on their own project, JEFF the Brotherhood, prompting Denney to rebuild the group with Joey Scala handling bass and vocals, Evan Scala on drums, and Sean Cotton contributing lead guitar and vocals; Daniel Pujol, who later fronted Pujol, also spent a short time in the ranks. Infinity Cat Records, the label run by JEFF the Brotherhood, put out a limited-edition cassette and a 7" single before the band moved to Limited Fanfare Records for a self-titled EP in 2012. Burger Records became their next home in 2014, issuing the debut full-length Mexican Coke, whose keyboard and saxophone parts were supplied by Ric Alessio.
