Born in 1958 in Baltimore, Maryland, Jones picked up guitar as a teenager and joined multiple blues groups across the state. He subsequently lived in Europe for a stretch, sharpening his technique while cultivating a loyal listenership. By the mid-1980s he had settled in Los Angeles, California, where his audience grew substantially through a blend of longstanding urban blues material and his own songs that retained the atmosphere yet adopted forceful rock-driven structures. After appearing with Zac Harmon’s band and other ensembles, he assembled his own unit in the mid-1990s. The fusion of styles is mirrored in the name of his company, Blue Rock Records, on which he started recording in the early 2000s. Kenny ‘Boudro’ Gray on bass and Michael Turner on drums anchored the lineup for his second album, 2005’s Passion For The Blues, while guests included Jimmy ‘Z’ Zavala on blues harp and saxophone, Marshall Thompson on keyboards, and Harmon.
