Biography
Born on 24 January 1948 in Clapham, London, England, Dennis Waterman gained his greatest recognition through roles on British television, although he also enjoyed a short-lived run of recording success during the early 1980s. While portraying DS George Carter in the late-1970s police series The Sweeney, he completed his first two albums, delivering them with the same vigorous energy that defined his on-screen character; neither release entered the charts. Chart fortunes changed once he took the part of Terry McCann in Minder, for which he both composed and performed the theme “I Could Be So Good For You,” a single that climbed to number 3 on the UK chart in 1980. Two years later he teamed with fellow cast member George Cole for the duet “What Are We Gonna Get ‘Er Indoors?,” its title drawn from a catchphrase associated with Cole’s character Arthur Daley; the track peaked at number 21 in December 1983. Releases that followed met with diminishing returns. Themes he wrote for the subsequent series Stay Lucky and On The Up likewise failed to register on the charts. In 1993 Waterman appeared in the West End production A Slice Of Saturday Night as an ageing rock ’n’ roll performer. He remained a familiar presence on British screens well into the new century, even as the comedy series Little Britain subjected him to repeated satire.
