Biography
Chicago post-rock outfit Dianogah draws its name from a trash-devouring creature in the first Star Wars movie and was formed by bassists Jay Ryan and Jason Harvey alongside drummer Kip McCabe. Their recorded debut arrived in 1995 with the single "100% Tree," which was followed in early 1996 by "Garden Airplane Trap"; the pair of 7"s later appeared together on the EP Old Material, New Format. The band’s first album, As Seen from Above, surfaced in 1997, after which they scattered contributions across compilations—including Zum Audio, Vol. 2 and the Reach the Rock soundtrack—until Battle Champions finally emerged in mid-2000. Steve Albini, a longtime Chicago-scene veteran, produced that album just as he had its predecessor. The ensuing spring brought the single Hannibal/A Bear Explains.... Their third studio album, Millions of Brazilians, came out in spring 2002 and included assistance from John McEntire (whose production credits encompass Tortoise, the Sea and Cake, and Bastro), Rachel Grimes of the Rachels, and John Upchurch of the Coctails. Dianogah resurfaced in 2008 with Qhnnnl.
