Red Alert earned renown as a radio personality and rap archivist whose airplay helped launch the careers of Boogie Down Productions, Black Sheep, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Jungle Brothers. He entered the field as a member of Afrika Bambaataa’s Zulu Nation crew and rose through its hierarchy until he reached top-DJ status. Shortly afterward, the theft of his equipment halted his progress for several months. His return to activity in the early ’80s aligned with Bambaataa and his DJ collective’s relocation to Manhattan’s downtown venues. Operating independently in Harlem, Red Alert cultivated a sizable audience at neighborhood clubs. When KISS-FM offered Bambaataa a late-night rap slot, the latter passed the program to his DJs, placing Red Alert third in line. Red Alert capitalized on the airtime, expanding his station following and issuing the scratch-record compilation “Hip-Hop Wax, Vol. 2,” which featured various New York DJs. The broadcasts also introduced new acts and fresh slang expressions to listeners. He later headed the Native Tongues collective, whose roster included De La Soul, the Jungle Brothers, and A Tribe Called Quest, and he served as executive producer on albums by the latter two groups.
