Biography
DJ Rekha ranks among America's foremost practitioners of bhangra music, yet she regularly folds dancehall, dub, and hip-hop textures into her sets. She operates out of New York City, where she has run the enduring monthly party Basement Bhangra at S.O.B.'s since its launch in 1997. The event's local success and the distinct character of her selections turned her into a minor media figure, earning coverage in the New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice, and New York Magazine, plus repeated appearances on NPR and features in The Fader and Urb. Born Rekha Malhotra in London, England, in 1971 to parents of Punjabi descent, she grew up between Queens and Westbury on Long Island before settling in Brooklyn, the borough she now regards as home. Her first proper album, the DJ mix Basement Bhangra, appeared on Koch Records in 2007.
