Another alias for the inventive and highly productive Madlib, born Otis Jackson, Jr., goes by DJ Rels, though liner notes for the 2004 debut album Theme for a Broken Soul attribute contributions to “J. Relmond.” Exposure to the broken beat sounds at London’s Co-op Club prompted Madlib to launch the project, which draws frequent parallels to West Londoners Seiji and Bugz in the Attic. Issued in 2003, the first 12" single, “Diggin in Brownswood,” earned widespread praise, including from Stones Throw, Madlib’s own label, which now identifies DJ Rels as one of his alter egos.
