During 2012, while Washed Out rose to prominence in the chillwave scene, keyboardist Phil Jones departed the group to focus once more on his solo endeavor Dog Bite. The Atlanta native had already explored ambient samples and GarageBand beats on his 2008 Owls Eyes EP before linking up with Ernest Greene of Washed Out. Bolstered by earnings from the Sub Pop-issued Within and Without, Jones invested in new equipment and resumed solo sessions, shifting toward a stronger emphasis on melody for the songs that became his first full-length, Velvet Changes. As work on the album wrapped, Jones revealed intentions to assemble a live ensemble drawn from Balkans, Red Sea, Mood Rings, and his former Washed Out bandmates for a 2013 road trip supporting Toro y Moi. Velvet Changes appeared in the early months of that year. Following a split single with Washed Out and the subsequent LA EP in late 2013, Dog Bite—now featuring bassist Woody Shortridge and drummer Tak Takemura as core members—highlighted the impact of soul legends Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes on their sound throughout the 2014 follow-up Tranquilizers.
