Biography
With her gentle singing voice, distinctive melodic turns, and emotionally open lyrics, Dorothea Paas echoes the early output of fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell, though her overall sound aligns more closely with experimental art rock. Over the decade leading to her first full-length release, she contributed vocals and guitar to projects by Jennifer Castle and U.S. Girls while shaping her own songs across a run of self-issued cassette tapes. When she completed Anything Can't Happen in 2021, Paas had earned respect from fellow musicians and displayed the insight of a more experienced creator. Her follow-up, the lighter and jazz-tinged Think of Mist from 2024, proved equally inventive after she composed arrangements for Badge Époque Ensemble and additional artists in the years between.
Born and still living in Toronto, where she performed with an opera choir and church groups during childhood, Paas kept a modest presence throughout the 2010s by issuing D.I.Y. cassette EPs such as 2013’s A Thirst and 2015’s Calm Your Body Down. Her songwriting gifts stood out quickly to close associates and audiences at her infrequent shows, despite her reluctance toward promotion. Gradually she found acceptance in the city’s independent scene, frequently serving as a touring support player for Jennifer Castle and U.S. Girls, experiences that acquainted her with industry practices.
In parallel she explored further on lo-fi releases like No Loose Ends (2016) and One for the Road (2018), moving across hazy melancholic textures, brisk post-rock passages, and sturdy folk forms. Toronto’s Telephone Explosion label eventually proposed a formal album, prompting her and her band to track at Fort Rose Studio in Hamilton. Completed in Toronto and mixed by Max Turnbull (Slim Twig), the resulting 2021 album Anything Can't Happen wove together the varied strands of her work into a cohesive blend of detailed folk songcraft and imaginative, layered rock arrangements, earning a long-list spot for the Polaris Music Prize.
While preparing her next record she appeared on releases by U.S. Girls, Kiwi Jr., and Shabason & Krgovich, and continued expanding her skills through arrangements for Badge Époque Ensemble and Marker Starling. The jazz, psychedelic, and progressive leanings of those projects colored the creation of the gentler Think of Mist, issued in November 2024 and matching her debut in its complexity and craft. Paas produced the album herself and handled mixing alongside engineer Dave Plowman (Rich Aucoin, Young Guv).
