Biography
Canada's Mauno ("mao-no") crafts a refined strain of indie pop that fuses the melodic drive of '60s pop, the bright chime of jangly guitar pop, and the polished textures of '70s prog and power pop into a distinctive, tuneful hybrid. The band surfaced in 2016 with its debut full-length, Rough Master.
Singer/songwriters Eliza Niemi on bass and Nick Everett on guitar assembled the group in Halifax, Nova Scotia, during 2014, selecting the name to honor Niemi's Finnish grandfather. Multi-instrumentalist Evan Matthews contributed drums and other parts to the self-produced Rough Master, which Tin Angel released that year. In 2017 the lineup expanded to a quartet for the follow-up Tuning, with Adam White taking over drums in place of Matthews and Scott Boudreau joining on guitar.
After the four members relocated their operations to Montreal, their third album, Really Well, was tracked primarily in Calgary under the guidance of singer/songwriter Chad VanGaalen, while Everett handled his vocal overdubs from home; Tin Angel issued the finished record in 2019.
