Weaves emerged in Toronto, Ontario, Canada during 2013, crafting an indie-rock approach marked by sharp wit, kinetic drive, and unexpected artistic shifts. The lineup featured lead singer Jasmyn Burke alongside guitarist Morgan Waters, bassist Zach Bines, and drummer Spencer Cole. Burke had been performing solo sets that paired her vocals with guitar and a looping sampler when Waters caught one of those shows from the crowd. Impressed by what he heard, Waters connected with her, and the pair soon traded musical concepts before trading Garageband sketches and shaping new material together. Once Burke and Waters had stockpiled enough songs, they recruited Bines and Cole to take the project onstage, allowing Weaves to establish themselves within Toronto’s active indie circuit. Recording began almost at once, yielding the digital single “Hulahoop” at the close of April 2013. “Motorcycle” appeared the following July, and “Take a Dip” surfaced in September. Those tracks, joined by three fresh cuts, formed the six-song EP titled Weaves, which surfaced in April 2014. In 2016 the band signed with Brooklyn’s Kanine Records and Canada’s Buzz Records, and the two labels jointly issued the debut full-length album, also called Weaves. Extensive touring followed, highlighted by the group’s 2016 SXSW performances that drew favorable coverage across North America, particularly for Burke’s expressive stage presence. October 2017 brought the long-awaited second album, Wide Open.
