Biography
Philadelphia's ever-inventive Spirit of the Beehive craft elaborate, often conflicting tracks that veer without warning across multiple genres while their words frequently convey irritation, detachment, and inner uncertainty. The group entered the scene in 2014 via a self-titled debut steeped in shoegaze textures, yet they have never stopped reshaping both personnel and sonic approach. Their 2018 album Hypnic Jerks swung between ethereal psych-pop and hook-driven indie rock, whereas 2021's Entertainment, Death delved into fractured electronics and hazy, vaporwave-tinged surfaces. A compact 2023 EP titled I'm So Lucky delivered abrasive, fragmented post-punk, and the comparatively streamlined full-length You'll Have to Lose Something surfaced in 2024.
The band took its name from a 1973 Spanish dramatic film and formed in 2014 with dual lead vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Zach Schwartz (ex-Glocca Morra) and Rivka Ravede alongside Justin Fox, Timothy Jordan, and Pat Conaboy. Ice Age Records and Ranch jointly issued the 2014 debut, which was followed in 2015 by the EP You Are Arrived (But You've Been Cheated). Moving away from the overt shoegaze leanings of their first record, the collective issued the psychedelic, patchwork-style Pleasure Suck on the indie rock and emo imprint Tiny Engines in 2017; Hypnic Jerks arrived the next year. Repeated membership changes occurred, and after Schwartz released his 2020 solo debut under the name Draag Me the band pared down to a trio of Schwartz, Ravede, and Corey Wichlin. They signed with Saddle Creek and reemerged in 2021 with Entertainment, Death, their widely praised fourth album. The four-track, post-punk-tinged EP I'm So Lucky, which drew from the romantic split between Schwartz and Ravede, came out in 2023. Continuing to examine relational endings, the group delivered You'll Have to Lose Something in 2024.
