Formed in 2013, Forth Wanderers emerged when singer and lyricist Ava Trilling teamed with guitarist and songwriter Ben Guterl to produce introspective indie rock carrying a Midwestern emo sensibility. While still high-school students in Montclair, New Jersey, the two began exchanging song ideas from different locations and developed a remote collaborative method. Guitarist Duke Greene, bass player Noah Schifrin, and drummer Zach Lorelli later joined to complete the lineup for the group’s initial demo. Later that same year Seagreen Records issued the EP Mahogany, after which the band independently released its first full-length effort, Tough Love, in 2014. Father/Daughter Records subsequently put out the second EP, Slop, in 2016.

When work began on the next album, Trilling had moved to New York while Guterl settled in Ohio. The five members converged in Philadelphia during the middle of 2017 to track the material alongside producer and engineer Cameron Konner, also known as Loadcard. The resulting record displayed a more assertive yet persistently angst-ridden tone that secured a contract with Sub Pop, which issued the Forth Wanderers LP in April 2018.
