During the 2000s, Canadian multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Ian Daniel Kehoe performed with Toronto groups such as Attack in Black before issuing multiple solo albums as Marine Dreams from 2011 to 2015. A respected touring musician on the indie scene, he first recorded under his own name with 2019's Secret Republic. Marine Dreams drew from classic psychedelic pop and power pop, whereas his work as Kehoe leaned toward new wave and synthy '80s pop. In August 2020 the prolific artist put out three independent full-length albums on the same day, then returned to a label with the sleek Yes Very So on Tin Angel in 2022.

In the mid-2000s, before turning professional as a singer-songwriter, Kehoe played in Toronto punk-revival outfits including Keep It Up. He joined brothers Daniel and Ian Romano plus guitarist Spencer Burton in the post-hardcore band Attack in Black, serving as co-songwriter and bassist from their Dine Alone Records debut, the 2006 Widows EP. Marriage followed as a full-length in July 2007. Reportedly written and recorded across two nights, The Curve of the Earth appeared three months later. In 2008 Kehoe, Daniel Romano, and guitarist Steve Lambke (Constantines, Baby Eagle) founded You've Changed Records, whose first release featured Attack in Black backing Shotgun Jimmie on 2009's Still Jimmie. The label also issued a split LP that year by Attack in Black and Baby Eagle, while Dine Alone released Attack in Black's third album, Years (By One Thousand Fingertips).

Citing influences such as Nick Lowe and Harry Nilsson, Kehoe issued an eponymous debut in 2011 under the Marine Dreams alias. Its catchy retro-pop leanings resurfaced on Corner of the Eye and Lemon Tree in 2013 and 2014. Northern Register by Community Theatre, a project featuring Kehoe and Lambke, also appeared in 2014. The next year Kehoe played drums on Lambke's solo LP Days of Heaven and released Producer's Wonderland, his fourth and last album as Marine Dreams. Throughout much of the 2010s he toured extensively, chiefly as drummer, with artists including Andy Shauf, Julia Jacklin, and the Weather Station. Attack in Black released the limited-edition live set Got Live: If You're Interested for Record Store Day Black Friday in November 2018.

Kehoe debuted under his own name in March 2019 with the Tin Angel full-length Secret Republic. Self-recorded with every instrument played by Kehoe, the album introduced a dreamy '80s-driven synth-pop approach. For his next endeavor he disclosed that he had finished three new albums, each probing a distinct side of his sound. Issued simultaneously on August 6, 2020, Charging the Stone emphasized direct songwriting in the style of John Lennon, while Rock & Roll Illusion and Disco Body Buzz centered on arena rock and electro-disco respectively. After this singular triptych, Kehoe resumed his main body of work with 2022's Yes Very So, another synth-driven set partly inspired by Hiroshi Yoshimura, Beverley Glenn-Copeland, and Pet Shop Boys.
