With lyrics that alternate between introspective probing and vivid depiction, Mo Kenney’s songs intersect indie folk, pop, and rock. The Canadian first issued an acoustic self-titled debut in 2012, then broadened her sonic range through electronics and full-band textures on 2014’s In My Dreams. Further enrichment arrived with 2017’s The Details, which incorporated driving indie rock, retro rock, and dreamy indie pop, before she pared arrangements down again for the 2021 solo album Covers and restored richer dimensions on the stylistically varied 2024 release From Nowhere.

Kenney began playing guitar at age 11 and, during her teenage years, cultivated affinities for Death Cab for Cutie, Led Zeppelin, and Elliott Smith. By 16 she was composing original material whose lyrics drew inspiration from the visual storytelling of director Wes Anderson. After cutting early demos in a Halifax studio, she encountered Nova Scotia musician Joel Plaskett, formerly of Thrush Hermet, who recognized the strength of her songwriting. Plaskett co-wrote and produced her self-titled debut, issued in 2012 on the Canadian indie label Pheromone Recordings. The album earned favorable notices and received a nomination for Rising Star Recording of the Year at the 2013 East Coast Music Association Awards; later that year the song “Sucker” won the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for Best Song by an Independent Artist. Additional recognition followed in 2013 when Kenney collected three Nova Scotia Music Awards—for Female Artist of the Year, New Artist Recording of the Year, and Pop Recording of the Year—before repeating the Pop Recording victory at the 2014 ECMA Awards.

Her second album, In My Dreams, appeared in September 2014. Produced once more by Plaskett, it featured denser arrangements and more polished production than the spare folk approach of the debut. Kenney supported the record with a cross-country tour and again received the ECMA Pop Recording of the Year Award. Work on her third album, The Details, culminated in its September 2017 release, which extended her stylistic reach into dreamy indie pop and propulsive indie rock.

Early in 2021 she returned to a minimalist setting for Covers, presenting renditions of songs by Big Star, the Magnetic Fields, Guided by Voices, and additional artists. Expanding once more toward expansive soundscapes, the 2024 singles “With You” and “Evening Dream” preceded her fifth album, From Nowhere. Recorded with returning collaborators including Plaskett and Rose Cousins, the project was captured, engineered, and mixed by Thomas Stajcer at Plaskett’s Fang Studios in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
