Biography
Award-winning Canadian blues guitarist and singer/songwriter Matt Andersen has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most tireless performers, logging roughly two hundred concerts annually. Rooted in an earthy mix of blue-collar folk, electric blues, and roots rock, the New Brunswick native launched his professional path in 2002 alongside the band Flat Top. His first solo outing, Second Time Around, surfaced in 2007, with Something in Between arriving the next year and Piggyback appearing in 2009 as a joint effort with the widely respected harmonica player Mike Stevens. Also in 2009 came his inaugural live recording, Live from the Phoenix Theatre, while Christmas Time marked his initial foray into seasonal repertoire. Two further studio projects reached listeners in 2011: Push Record, again involving Mike Stevens, and Coal Miner Blues. Weightless, helmed by producer Steve Berlin and marking Andersen’s first release on the True North imprint, landed in 2014 and secured him a Juno nomination in the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year category. For the subsequent album he headed to New York, where he enlisted Commissioner Gordon—known for prior work with Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone—to shape 2016’s Honest Man. The live set Live at Olympic Hall followed in 2018, capturing Andersen and his band the Mellotones at Halifax, Nova Scotia’s storied venue.
