Biography
Doug Paisley, an understated singer and songwriter skilled at crafting weathered melodies paired with lyrics of subtle observation, built a modest but loyal audience among Americana listeners drawn to literary qualities during the 2010s. Before turning to solo material, he had spent the preceding decade performing in assorted bluegrass groups, yet his independent releases drew praise for their intimate character, above all the 2010 breakthrough Constant Companion that included a guest turn from the Band’s Garth Hudson. Hudson returned on Strong Feelings in 2014. Both albums earned favorable attention from outlets of high standing such as The New Yorker, which helped prepare the ground for Starter Home in 2018 and the strongest notices Paisley had received.
Born in Toronto, Canada, Paisley absorbed the Beatles in childhood, encountered Bob Dylan through his father, and later gravitated toward old-time country and bluegrass. As a teenager he performed reggae with seasoned Caribbean musicians in Toronto, although his first sustained engagement with bluegrass occurred while he studied at Trent University. Alongside Chuck Erlichman he launched multiple projects, each centered on a distinct idiom: Russian Literature specialized in arty pop, Stanley Brothers: A Living Tribute honored bluegrass forebears, and Live Country Music featured regular appearances with Matt Barber and Paul Matthew.
Paisley first presented original songs in 2006, touring with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and adopting the name Dark Hand & Lamplight for performances with visual artist Shary Boyle. Dark Hand appeared at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2008, the same year his self-titled debut arrived on No Quarter.
Constant Companion, his second album, followed in 2010 and raised his profile through positive notices in Mojo and The New Yorker. The EP Golden Embers appeared in 2012, and the full-length Strong Feelings reached listeners in early 2014. After additional studio work, Paisley completed and issued his fourth album, Starter Home, in 2018.
