Biography
Born to the legendary guitarist Jimmy Raney, Doug Raney naturally drew strong inspiration from his parent. As a skilled solo performer, he employed very similar rich tones, precise chord work, and smooth phrasing techniques. His debut appearance on record came alongside his father and Al Haig during the middle of the 1970s, followed by joint performances in duet format with his father toward the close of that decade. On the SteepleChase label, Raney assembled an especially extensive body of recorded work that started in the 1970s and continued almost until the conclusion of the 1990s. Collaborations included sessions with Chet Baker and Bernt Rosengren, in addition to his role as a member of Horace Parlan's group. Denmark served as his home for much of his professional life, where he passed away due to heart failure in Copenhagen during May 2016, when he reached the age of 59.
