Eagle-Eye Cherry first drew widespread attention through his breakthrough single “Save Tonight,” which showcased the singer-songwriter’s melodic, folk-tinged take on alternative rock. Reaching the top spot on both the Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Alternative Songs charts, the track propelled his 1997 debut album Desireless to number 45 on the Billboard 200 while climbing to number two in his native Sweden. That success positioned him as the next family member to make waves in music, following avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, his father, and alternative rap pioneer Neneh Cherry, his sister. Cherry has continued to maintain a strong creative foothold in Sweden, where later releases such as 2000’s Living in the Present Future and 2003’s Sub Rosa reached the Top 40 alongside singles including “Are You Still Having Fun?” and “Dream Away” with Darin. His fourth album, Can’t Get Enough, arrived in 2012, and Streets of You followed in 2018. He resurfaced in 2021 with the single “I Like It,” the lead track from 2023’s Back on Track.

Born in Stockholm in 1971, Cherry received the name Eagle-Eye at birth after opening only one eye the first time he gazed at his father. He divided his early years between Sweden and touring alongside Don Cherry; when the family relocated to New York at age fourteen, he enrolled at the New York School of Performing Arts to study acting. Around the same time he began drumming in casual bands and later experimented with keyboards and songwriting, yet acting stayed his main pursuit. After graduation he supported himself through stage roles, commercials, and occasional television pilots, including a guest spot on The Cosby Show, while gradually returning to guitar and original material in search of greater creative autonomy.

Following Don Cherry’s death in 1995, a grieving Eagle-Eye relocated to Stockholm with his girlfriend to regroup. There he focused intently on songwriting, shaping a collection of acoustic-driven pieces rooted in the singer-songwriter tradition and accented by blues and light funk. Opting to test the waters in Sweden rather than the crowded U.S. market, he recorded Desireless and issued it quietly on the local Diesel label in 1997. Bolstered by “Save Tonight” and “Falling in Love Again,” the album gained traction first domestically, then across Scandinavia and eventually throughout Europe. Sony’s Work Group picked it up for American release in summer 1998, and “Save Tonight” steadily ascended the charts, ultimately reaching the Top Five with crucial VH1 exposure. Desireless earned platinum certification in the States and ultimately sold four million copies worldwide. In summer 1999 Cherry joined Carlos Santana’s acclaimed comeback album Supernatural, contributing vocals to the duet “Wishing It Was.”

While touring extensively behind Desireless, Cherry experienced the end of his relationship, an event that shaped his sophomore effort Living in the Present Future. Released in Europe in 2000, the album peaked at number three in Sweden, number six in Switzerland, and number twelve in the U.K., yielding singles such as “Feels So Right” and the duet “Long Way Around” with sister Neneh. A remixed U.S. version retitled Present/Future featured a revised track sequence and several new songs, finally appearing in late 2001. Sub Rosa, his third full-length, surfaced in 2003 with production from Al Stone, Cameron McVey, and Klas Åhlund; it entered the Top 40 in Sweden and Switzerland and included the singles “Skull Tattoo” and “Don’t Give Up,” the latter also appearing on the Holes soundtrack. Klas Åhlund returned to produce 2012’s Can’t Get Enough, which additionally featured contributions from Max Martin. In subsequent years Cherry issued standalone tracks such as “As One” with Tomas Ledin and 2014’s “Dream Away” with Darin. Streets of You, his fifth album and first on his own Papa Cherry imprint, arrived in 2018. Although eager to deliver a follow-up quickly, pandemic restrictions slowed his progress; he spent much of the lockdown developing new material and released Back on Track in 2023. Fronted by “I Like It,” the record reflected influences from the post-punk and new-wave acts he admired growing up, among them Talking Heads, Blondie, and the Clash.
