Biography
While serving in the U.S. Army Airborne Infantry Division, Atlanta-based folksinger Shawn Mullins, best recognized for the Top Ten single "Lullaby," issued his debut self-titled cassette on his own imprint, SM, during 1989. After Everchanging World appeared in 1991, he concluded eight years of military duty and shifted to a full-time music career. Three fruitless years of seeking a recording contract prompted him to launch the SMG label, through which he issued Better Days and Big Blue Sky. The 1995 live sets Jeff's Last Dance, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, recorded with Matthew Kahler, preceded his next solo album, Eggshells, the following year.
Soul's Core arrived in 1998 as his Columbia Records debut and critical breakthrough; the track "Lullaby" reached the top of the charts, earned a Grammy nomination, and helped the album achieve platinum status. That success led to the 1999 anthology The First Ten Years, which gathered earlier material. Beneath the Velvet Sun followed at the close of 2000 as the official successor to Soul's Core. The Essential Shawn Mullins compilation surfaced in 2003, and 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor became his first Vanguard release in 2006. He stayed with the label for 2008's Honeydew, an album inspired by and recorded in his native Georgia. Throughout the remainder of that year he co-wrote the number-one hit "Toes" for the Zac Brown Band and delivered Live at the Variety Playhouse, documenting a sold-out Atlanta performance. Two years afterward came his eleventh studio album, Light You Up, extending the rustic Americana direction begun with 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor. Five years later he joined Sugar Hill Records and released My Stupid Heart in October 2015.
Mullins reemerged in 2018 with the double album Soul's Core Revival, presenting two distinct interpretations of his 1998 Columbia breakthrough. The opening disc was captured with his touring ensemble Soul Carnival, while the second disc offers an acoustic rendering that includes spoken introductions from Mullins.
