Biography
Born to Randy Bachman of the Guess Who and BTO, the Canadian pop singer and songwriter Tal Bachman grew up immersed in music, drawing from the vast range of his father’s record collection while mastering the guitar on his own. During his teenage years, however, his passion for music waned, prompting him instead to enroll in political philosophy at a modest Utah college. That academic path proved short-lived, and in 1995 he left school behind to head back to Vancouver, where he began composing original material. A demo soon landed him a contract with Columbia Records, resulting in the release of his self-titled debut album in 1999. The following year, the track “She’s So High” reached the international Top Ten, sparking numerous television spots and joint tours with Bryan Adams and the Barenaked Ladies. Later projects, among them the 2001 EP If You Sleep and the 2004 album Staring Down the Sun, achieved far less commercial traction, leading Bachman to explore other pursuits such as political commentary. He resumed recording in 2011.
