Eduardo Lages, an awarded composer, counts recordings of his compositions among the discographies of Roberto Carlos, Nelson Gonçalves, Emílio Santiago, Claudette Soares, Agostinho dos Santos, Agnaldo Timóteo, João Paulo e Daniel, and Rosemary, to name several. His professional start came when he served as arranger, conductor, and composer for the Movimento Artístico Universitário (MAU), whose roster also featured Ivan Lins and Gonzaguinha. Later he became a member of Quarteto Forma, contributing as arranger, conductor, musician, and vocalist.
In 1969 “Canto da Praia Grande,” a collaboration with Paulinho Machado and performed by Momento 4, secured first place at the Festival Fluminense da Canção Popular. Two years afterward, “Razão de Paz Pra Não Cantar,” written with Alézio Barros and sung by Cláudia, captured first place at the same Fluminense festival while finishing fourth at the IV Festival Internacional da Canção Popular; the piece further received awards for Best Song, Best Lyrics, Best Arrangement, and Best Interpreter at the Peru Song Festival. In 1970 “Retirada,” another Barros partnership delivered by Sônia Lemos, earned second place at the Festival Fluminense da Canção Popular. The following year Cláudia’s interpretation of “A Nave,” co-written with Márcio Proença, took first place at that same festival. “Água Clara,” a joint effort with Paulinho Machado and performed by Eduardo Conde, won top honors at the Festival de Belo Horizonte. Cláudia’s reading of “Canção de Amor e Paz,” again with Barros, claimed first place at the Festival da Canção do México and likewise collected the prizes for Best Song, Best Lyrics, Best Arrangement, and Best Interpreter.
Across projects he has functioned as musical director, conductor, musician, or arranger for Benito di Paula, Marcos Valle, Zezé di Camargo e Luciano, Chitãozinho e Xororó, Agnaldo Timóteo, Roberta Miranda, and Nelson Gonçalves, as well as for the children’s productions Sonho de Alice and A Bela Adormecida. At Chico’s Bar he performed alongside Luizinho Eça, Nana Caymmi, and additional musicians and singers. During a seventeen-year tenure at TV Globo he supplied numerous vignettes, themes, and incidental scores for programs broadcast across the country. Beginning in 1979 he served as arranger, conductor, and musical director for Roberto Carlos, including the 1998 concert in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul) that paired Luciano Pavarotti with Roberto Carlos. That same year he acted as arranger and musical director for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Rio de Janeiro, which featured the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra. In 2000 he coordinated the music for a concert in Salvador (Bahia) that brought together Luciano Pavarotti, Gal Costa, and Maria Bethânia.
