Biography
Dutch vocalist and composer Eefje de Visser threads folk, psychedelic hues, and atmospheric layers through her dreamlike, inward-facing alt-pop. Following the 2011 arrival of her debut album De Koek, which entered the Dutch Top 40, she notched consecutive Top Ten entries with 2013’s Het Is and 2020’s Bitterzoet. Over that span her sonic palette shifted from the acoustic-folk base and electronic haze of her first releases toward the more dancefloor-oriented approach heard on the later set. With the 2024 singles “Heimwee” and “Gloeien,” both drawn from her fifth studio album Heimwee, she signaled an ongoing fusion of wistful pop, late-night club rhythms, and folk traditions.
Born in Voorburg in 1986, de Visser spent her childhood in the small South Holland village of Moordrecht. Music claimed her attention early; she penned her first song at age eleven and appeared in several school bands. Her breakthrough arrived in 2009 at the Grote Prijs van Nederland, the nation’s premier contest for emerging artists, whose past winners include Junkie XL. The evening before the final she performed “Hartslag” on the variety program De Wereld Draait Door, marking her first national television appearance. She captured the singer/songwriter prize the next day, the judges citing the stark, evocative quality of her acoustic folk-pop. “Hartslag” surfaced as a digital single the following year, and De Koek (“The Cake”) followed in 2011, ultimately peaking at number 35 on the Dutch chart.
Once established on the festival circuit, she delivered 2013’s Het Is (“It Is”), which climbed to number three at home and registered on Belgian charts. The 2016 release Nachtlicht (“Night Light”) emphasized electronics and adopted a comparatively brighter tone, reaching number eight. Four years later Bitterzoet (“Bittersweet”) returned her to the Dutch Top Three while topping Belgium’s Flemish chart; its denser arrangements incorporated reverberant nocturnal beats and marked her first collaboration with co-producer, engineer, and mixer Pieterjan Coppejans, her husband. By then settled in Ghent, the couple welcomed their first child in 2021.
In the interval between Bitterzoet and her fifth studio album, de Visser issued the 2022 EP Blauwe Regen, containing three original tracks and two remixes, followed by the live recording Bitterzoet LIVE, which entered the Dutch Top 40 in 2023. The single “Heimwee,” unveiled early in 2024, supplied the title for the full-length issued that September. Drawing on experiences surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic as well as pregnancy and motherhood, Heimwee (“Homesick”) extended her exploration of introspective pop.
