Eisenfunk took shape in Munich during 2006 when singer and producer Michael Mayer—distinct from the Kompakt-affiliated German techno figure who shares his name—began the industrial project as a solo venture. Their initial recording, the 2007 album Funkferngesteuert, appeared on Biohazzard Records, an imprint under Danse Macabre. Mayer then added Arthur Stauder on electronic drums and Toni Schulz on keyboards and samples, converting the endeavor into a three-piece. The newly formed group reworked Funkferngesteuert, inserted a pair of fresh tracks, and released the updated collection in October 2007 under the title Eisenfunk. Within Germany’s alternative music scene the album steadily built momentum, attaining the number-two slot on the national alternative albums chart by March 2008. In the same period the band issued the limited-edition EP 300, which consisted chiefly of remixes.
