Biography
Ekin Üzeltüzenci, a Turkish musician, produces gently undulating drone-folk under the name Ekin Fil. Working chiefly with guitar, voice, and restrained electronics, she crafts austere yet enveloping sound worlds—exemplified by the 2013 album Ekin Fil and the 2018 release Maps—that suggest shoegaze drained of distortion or ethereal darkwave stripped of gothic traces.
Before inaugurating the Ekin Fil project, she sang and played keyboards in several Istanbul ensembles, among them the post-rock trio Proudpilot, formed in 2000 and responsible for the 2009 album Monsters Exist. That year also brought her self-released debut CD-R, Soon, followed in 2011 by the cassette Language on Root Strata. She contributed vocals to a 2013 EP by Root Strata co-founder Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, while her self-titled LP appeared the same year on Students of Decay after label chief Alex Cobb was introduced to her work by Grouper, whom Ekin Fil had supported on European dates. Shortly thereafter she issued cassettes on Bathetic Records and No Kings as well as a limited 2015 7". Releases on Helen Scarsdale Agency began with the 2016 LP Being Near. After 2017’s Ghosts Inside came a cassette edition of her score for Ceylan Özgün Özçelik’s film Inflame, succeeded by the Maps LP in 2018.
