Eliete Negreiros ranks among the most expressive figures in the vanguarda paulista, the São Paulo vanguard that surfaced during the 1980s. Childhood exposure to music came through her pianist mother and mandolinist uncle, while formal training followed at the Music Conservatory of São Paulo. Professional work began in the 1970s with tours across Mexico and the United States, where she performed with Brazilian music ensembles. After returning home in 1982 she cut the LP Outros Sons and received the APCA Award for Outstanding Female Singer of the Year. The following year she appeared on the independently released compilation MPB/Edição Independente, issued by the satirical weekly Pasquim. Caetano Veloso, Arrigo Barnabé, and Eduardo Gudin composed the song “Ângulos: Tudo Está Dito” expressly for her; it surfaced on her own 1986 LP of the same name. In 1992 her CD Canção Brasileira: A Nossa Bela Alma earned her another APCA Award, this time for Best Singer.
