Elizabeth Mitchell, the Australian singer and songwriter who performs under the name Elizabeth, first drew attention as the lead vocalist of Melbourne indie pop outfit Totally Mild. The inventive band issued two well-received albums during the second half of the 2010s and then dissolved in 2019. That same year she stepped out on her own, adopting a richer and broader pop approach for her debut full-length, The Wonderful World of Nature.

Mitchell’s clear, emotive delivery and keen melodic instincts brought an opulent sheen to Totally Mild’s atmospheric, surf-inflected dream pop, which early on invited parallels with Mazzy Star and Beach House. The group attracted notice via its 2015 debut, Down Time, and returned three years afterward with the more refined and ambitious Her, an album that already suggested the direction Mitchell would later pursue. Credited simply as Elizabeth, she issued her initial solo track, the smoldering “Burn It All,” in August 2018, several months prior to Totally Mild’s breakup the following year. Further singles, among them “Parties” and “Meander,” appeared across 2019; accompanying coverage presented her as “a queer pop anti-heroine” and sketched a brooding yet stylish persona that her November debut album, The Wonderful World of Nature, brought into sharper focus.
