Guitarist Esteban, born Stephen Paul, first took up the instrument in his early childhood. After earning a degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, he relocated to Spain for advanced instruction under Andrés Segovia, recognized as the father of the modern classical guitar movement, before coming back to the United States in 1978. A car accident then left him sidelined from performance for ten years, though the nickname Esteban had already been bestowed by his instructor and guide. Returning to active music-making in the 1990s, he achieved chart success by self-releasing the albums By Request and Flame Flamenco & Romance. Numerous further recordings appeared, after which Esteban created an instructional guitar series promoted chiefly via television and video alongside his American Legacy line of instruments, which he showcases extensively in those presentations. Best of Esteban reached stores on CD in 2006.
