Emerging from Marseilles, France, the nu metal outfit Eths originated in 1996 under another name. Staif Bihl, who covered guitars, vocals, and samples, joined forces with guitarist Greg Rouviere to launch the project. Additional members joined gradually across the next three years, culminating in the formal adoption of the Eths name in 1999. Ahead of any full-length release, the band put out three CD EPs—Eths in 1999, Autopsie in 2000, and Samantha in 2002—while maintaining a steady schedule of shows throughout western Europe. Their debut album, Soma, surfaced in 2004 once Coriace had signed them. A major shift hit in 2006 when the rhythm section departed, removing both bass and drums from the lineup. Fresh players were drawn from the ranks of their collaborators and labelmates, allowing Eths to return to the studio for the follow-up project without much delay. That second album, Teratologie, reached French listeners in late 2007 and became available elsewhere in March 2008.
