In the midst of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida's tourist traps, nude beaches, and boisterous college crowds, the anglophile members of Fashionista summon a Brit-pop atmosphere more evocative of rain-soaked England, stretching from Blur to Pulp. Anthony Fashion on vocals and guitar, Howard Melnick on guitar, Jarrod Rose on bass and vocals, George Borghi with Juno 6, and Asif Ali on drums converged through a common passion for Bowie, glam rock, and shoegaze outfits such as Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine. Their nearest American counterparts reside on the far side of the country amid the Pacific Northwest's Aveo. Echoing that ensemble, Fashionista relies on resonant vocals and a distinctive guitar jangle to honor the Smiths. Occasional passages build toward guitar textures recalling Kevin Shields. Their strongest stylistic links abroad point to the glammed-up Suede and the rather somber Gene. The group's debut EP, Neptune, King of the Sea, appeared on Claire Records in 2001 and aligns most closely with U.K. acts that followed the Smiths, where guitarists draw from the Johnny Marr sound and vocalists remain infatuated with the brilliant Morrissey.
