Biography
Fellini issued four self-released albums that earned widespread critical praise by fusing unsettling lyrics and post-punk textures—drawn from Gang of Four, Stranglers, the Fall, and Joy Division—with British rock and MPB. Cadão Volpato’s sharply ironic songwriting caught the attention of the mangue beat circle, prompting Chico Science & Nação Zumbi to include his co-written track “Criança de Domingo” (with Ricardo Salvagni) on Afrociberdelia. The band’s debut, O Adeus de Fellini (1985), signaled its sardonic outlook through the title itself; one song from the record, “Outro Endereço, Outras Vidas,” later received airplay on English DJ John Peel’s program. The follow-up, Fellini Só Vive 2 Vezes, was tracked under extremely limited circumstances by only Thomas Pappon and Volpato, although the sessions actually took place before the first album appeared. In 1987 the group released Três Lugares Diferentes, which merged Brazilian rhythms with a rock stance and was voted best Brazilian rock album of the year in a critics’ poll, sharing the distinction with Titãs. Former members regrouped in 1998 for a tour of several Brazilian cities that concluded with a performance at the Rec-Beat Festival in Recife, Pernambuco, early the following year.
