Biography
Vocalist Mina ranks among Italy’s most cherished and legendary figures, her rich and commanding timbre leaving an unmistakable imprint across a catalog that roamed freely from Italian pop and R&B into bossa nova, jazz, and even disco. Beginning with her breakthrough chart-topper “Tintarella di luna” in 1959 and continuing through the 1970s successes “Amor mio,” “Parole Parole,” “E poi...,” and “L’importante è finire,” she emerged as a pioneering presence who defied prevailing social conventions and came to embody female empowerment through her bold public persona and candid songwriting. Well into the new millennium, her steady stream of stylistically varied releases sustained her commercial dominance, yielding more than a dozen number-one albums alongside several charting singles.
Anna Maria Mazzini entered the world in Busto Arsizio, Lombardy, in 1940. She made her first appearance onstage in 1958 at the club La Bussola, where Ducale-Italdisc Broadway producer David Matalon took notice. Impressed by the newcomer, he promptly arranged four recordings: a pair of English-language tracks issued under the name Baby Gate—“Be Bop a Lula” and “When”—and two Italian sides credited to Mina—“Non Partir” and “Malatia.” She adopted the latter moniker for her debut album, Tintarella di Luna, which appeared in 1960.
Throughout the 1960s she completed more than a dozen LPs. Postwar television advertising and the ensuing economic expansion gave her widespread visibility, turning her into one of Italy’s biggest celebrities and securing seven number-one albums, among them the 1971 best-seller Mina and 1976’s Singolare y Plurale. At the peak of her fame she declared her withdrawal from public performance, a decision realized after the 1978 concert set Mina Live ’78. Captured once more at La Bussola, the recording marked the first two decades of her career.
Although she stepped away from the stage, she continued to record and issue new material that kept her on the charts through the 1980s and 1990s. Nearly three dozen projects emerged during those years, seven of them reaching the summit of the Italian album listings, including Si, Buana (1986), Lochness (1993), Leggera (1997), and Olio (1999). Alongside fresh releases she began compiling retrospective collections; 2004’s triple-disc The Platinum Collection topped the charts and introduced her catalog to younger listeners. The next year brought Bula Bula, another number-one album shaped by polished pop production and dance rhythms. Even in her seventies she maintained momentum, scoring further chart-toppers with Le Migliori (2016) and Maeba (2018). In 2019 she collaborated with fellow vocalist Ivano Fossati on the duets album Mina Fossati.
