Renato Zero, the Italian pop singer and actor, issued his debut LP No! Mamma No! in 1973, even though earlier recordings existed that were later gathered on Via Tagliamento 1965-1970. Five further albums appeared from him across the 1970s, among them the hits Trapezio, Zerofobia, and Erozero. He opened the 1980s with the double-album Tregua, then maintained an even heavier pace through the decade by releasing eight albums total. Five of those reached number one in Italy, including Truce, Artide Antartide, Calore, and Leoni Si Nasce.

Although his popularity waned in the late 1980s, Zero staged a vigorous return in 1991 with the simultaneous arrival of Prometeo and La Coscienza di Zero. He then maintained a steady output by releasing one album each year from 1993 to 1996, among them the number one successes Passaporto Per Fonopoli in 1993 and L'Imperfetto in 1994.

Throughout the 2000s he sustained chart dominance while regularly performing for enormous, devoted audiences on tour. Strong public reception followed his releases into the 2010s as well. After a period without a chart-topping album, the reflective Amo Capitolo I and Amo Capitolo II both reached number one in Italy in 2013. Three years later he issued the highly anticipated Alt, which debuted at number one in April 2016 and attained platinum status within three months.
