Italian pop star Fiorella Mannoia first entered the entertainment industry at age 13 by appearing in the film Non Cantare, Spara!. She issued her debut single in 1969, and RCA put out her initial album, Mannoia, Foresi & Co, in 1972. She performed at the Sanremo Festival in 1981 with "Cafe Nero Bollente" and returned there in 1984 to deliver "Come Si Cambia." Ariston released Momento Delicato the following year, after which a self-titled album arrived in 1986 and Di Terra Di Vento followed in 1989, spotlighting Chico Buarque's classic "Oh Che Sara." In 1994 she joined Brazilian singer/songwriter Caetano Veloso to record "Il Culo del Mondo."

Recording activity slowed somewhat during the 2000s, yet Fragile and Onda Tropicale both achieved strong popularity, while three live albums surfaced between 1999 and 2004. Early in 2012 she issued Sud, which contained several tracks she wrote herself, and later that year the concert set Sud il Tour received favorable notices. The full-length tribute A Te, honoring Lucio Dalla, appeared in 2013.

Marking her 60th birthday, the November 2014 release Fiorella entered the Italian chart at number one and remained in the Top Ten through the close of the year. Mannoia personally selected the material for the double-disc edition, which gathered career highlights alongside collaborations with Laura Pausini, Daniele Silvestri, Adriano Celentano, Claudio Baglioni, Franco Battiato, Tiziano Ferro, Ligabue, Renato Zero, and Pino Daniele.
