Samuele Bersani earned recognition as one of Italy’s most gifted emerging songwriters. After contributing material to established figures such as Lucio Dalla, he launched his own recording career in 1991 with the album C'Hanno Preso Tuto, whose standout single “Chicco e Spillo” became a major hit. Although he kept accepting commissions from more prominent vocalists, Bersani maintained a steady output of songs intended for his own performances. Issued four years afterward, his follow-up project exceeded every commercial forecast; Freak ranked among the year’s most successful releases and remained inside the Top 100 through the opening months of 1996. During that same year he wrote the radio hit “Canzone” for Lucio Dalla, a track that ultimately surpassed one million copies sold. In 1997 Bersani issued a self-titled album that fell short of Freak’s sales figures yet earned him the Lunezia prize for the song “Giudizi Universali.” Further honors arrived when his 2000 live recording received the Targa Tenco “Album of the Year” award. After the 2003 release Caramella Smog, he gained wider international notice with L'Aldiqua', which Billboard ranked among its Top 100 European albums of 2006.
