Sergio Cammariere entered the world in Crotone, Italy during the 1960s. His singular approach to composition and agile command of the piano remained largely unnoticed until he reached his mid-thirties and stepped onto the public stage. The Premio Tenco Award for best performer of the year came his way in 1997. Labeled the revelation of the year, he left eager listeners waiting five years before delivering his first album, Dalla Pace del Mare Lontano, which appeared on the Via Veneto jazz Label. That project emerged from sessions shared with lyricist Roberto Kunstler, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and an array of distinguished Italian jazz players. The months that followed brought sustained touring and a string of honors, among them Best First Album and Best Up-and-Coming Artists, bestowed by leading festivals and publications across the country. A double triumph at Sanremo in 2003—the Critics Award together with Best Musical Composition—lifted Cammariere from local recognition to nationwide prominence. Also in 2003 the major EMI imprint issued his inaugural concert DVD, In Concerto, captured at the Strahler Theatre in Milan. Nearly twelve months afterward, in November 2004, his second album Sul Sentiero reached stores. Its layered string writing and vigorous jazz elements cemented his standing as Italy’s leading voice in pop-jazz fusion. Two years on he issued his first entirely self-produced set, Il Pane, Il Vino e la Visione, which for the first time featured an international roster of jazz luminaries that included Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, and Bebo Ferra.
