Biography
Rino Gaetano earned renown as an Italian singer and songwriter whose satirical bent defined much of the 1970s. At the age of ten he left Crotone in Calabria with his family, who relocated to Rome in pursuit of employment. He remained in the capital for the rest of his days, yet the modest origins of his southern upbringing continued to surface across his work. From the outset Gaetano embraced the stance of an outsider, fashioning that identity with deliberate flair and evident delight through a succession of provocative releases and theatrical stage shows. Because his biting, unconventional lyrics and vocal approach clashed with prevailing commercial tastes as well as with the era’s socially committed Italian performers, his first efforts—a 1973 single titled “I Love You Marianna” and the 1974 album Ingresso Libero—passed largely unnoticed. Success arrived when the track “Il Cielo è Sempre Più Blu,” a characteristically caustic portrait of Italian life, unexpectedly reached the summit of the charts in 1975. Over the next four years he issued four well-received albums—Mio Fratello è Figlio Unico, Aida, Nuntereggae Più, and Resta Vile Maschio Dove Vai—that established him as the country’s leading ironic observer of its sexual mores, religious pieties, and political graft. Gaetano’s singular independence of spirit found further expression in flamboyant costumes and performances, above all at the San Remo festival, an institution he delighted in lampooning even while recognizing the necessity of appearing there to move units. On 2 June 1981 he lost his life in a Rome traffic collision at the age of thirty-one, mere weeks before his planned wedding.
