Hailing from San Francisco, Fightmaster stands out for its ability to convey viewpoints from either gender through its pair of lead singers, Duke Fightmaster and Lesley Frost, who perform both independently and together. Their vocals and folk-rock approach evoke the era of Jefferson Airplane and Fleetwood Mac. Amid a local environment dominated by punk, grunge, rap, metal, pop, and rapcore, the band avoids those genres entirely, instead pursuing an independent path marked by music that remains gentle and melodic while also energetic and occasionally pointed in its humor.

Guitarist Duke Fightmaster spent his early years in Mission Viejo, CA, where he once characterized himself as "a destructive problem kid" before settling into a focus on songwriting. Among his key influences were Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, X, Wilco, and Richard and Linda Thompson. Although he performed with multiple Bay Area groups, by the summer of 1998 he had nearly abandoned music until an unexpected romantic meeting altered that course. He had committed to performing at a show alongside a friend's ensemble, and during rehearsal he began singing alongside the group's backup harmony vocalist, Lesley Frost. Their collaboration sparked both a personal relationship and an artistic alliance.

Frost left her previous group to team with Duke in establishing Fightmaster, and she mastered bass after the members abandoned their search for a dedicated player. Bob Marcucci, once a high school football standout from San Rafael, came to Frost's attention via an online posting and proved to be the sole candidate auditioned for the drummer position. The band tracked its debut album, Closer Now, at Oakland's Wally Sound, the same facility where Tarnation and Dieselhed originated their recordings. Fightmaster has appeared at San Francisco spots including the Paradise Lounge and the Hotel Utah, and issued 2001's Closer Now.
