Mark Barrott approached jungle from an ambient angle, prioritizing complete albums over high-energy singles, and issued his work through Planet Dog Records, an imprint better known for its gritty psychedelic trance output than for breakbeat experimentation. Born in Sheffield, he studied piano during childhood before developing a fascination with synthesizers. By the early 1990s, after acid-house, ambient, and the initial surge of jungle had each swept through England in turn, he had assembled a basic home-studio rig. In 1995 he started laying down downtempo drum’n’bass tracks and chose Planet Dog as his label in the expectation of greater freedom to issue full-length projects. His debut album, Time & Bass, appeared the next year and subsequently received an American release.

Still in 1996, Barrott scored music for VH1’s Worldwide Fashion Awards. He also put together a live presentation under the Future Loop Foundation name that performed at Talvin Singh’s Anokha club and joined Planet Dog’s Megadog touring package. In addition, he taped the inaugural session for Radio One’s One in the Jungle program. His second album, Conditions for Living, followed in 1998. Teaming with Planet Dog founder Michael Dog, Barrott resurfaced in 2000 on the album Phunk Roc.
