Ghost Wave, a New Zealand indie pop outfit, came together in Auckland during 2010 when local songwriter Matthew L. Paul assembled the project, drawing from the classic Flying Nun acts the Clean, the Chills, and the Bats. Working first with Eammon Logan, Paul laid down the initial EP before expanding the performing lineup through bassist Mike Ellis and, in time, Jamie Kennedy plus Andy Frost. Early activity brought the usual setbacks of stolen equipment along with support slots alongside Times New Viking and Explosions in the Sky. Following consistent gigs and studio work, the band issued its first full-length record, Ages, in 2013. Thomas Bell of the Clean handled engineering and mixing duties, and the album appeared on Flying Nun, neatly closing the circle with the group’s formative reference points. The next effort, Radio Norfolk, surfaced in summer 2016, further developing the psychedelic pop approach while folding in additional electronic textures.
