Ghostland issued its first album in 1998 with scant notice, years ahead of the moment when “Guide Me God” turned into a global club hit after Junior Vasquez reworked and promoted it. The London-based trio—guitarist Justin Adams, producer and multi-instrumentalist John Reynolds, and cellist Caroline Dale—draws on separate musical histories. Reynolds in particular brought extensive experience, having helmed records for Boyzone, Adam Ant, Jah Wobble, Sinéad O’Connor, and Natacha Atlas across the 1990s. Those ties proved decisive for Ghostland. Both O’Connor and Atlas added vocals to the debut, whose blend of acoustic instruments such as guitar and cello with electronica placed “Guide Me God” at the forefront, lifted by their otherworldly delivery. Several years passed before the number gained fresh traction as a progressive-house anthem once remixed. Vasquez, among New York’s leading house DJs, did more than anyone to advance the track, supplying a remix that he placed prominently on the 2002 Tommy Boy compilation Earth Music.
