Biography
Indie rock outfit Girl Friday weave strands of ’90s alt-rock, the Bangles’ chiming jangle pop, punk abrasion, and additional strands into their sharply melodic yet detached compositions. Their debut long-player, Androgynous Mary, surfaced in 2020.
The group coalesced after guitarist Vera Ellen, while visiting a UCLA acquaintance, overheard bassist Libby Hsieh rehearsing on a living-room couch. Captivated by the playing, Ellen made contact, and the pair quickly established a regular rehearsal routine. Through overlapping social circles they later recruited guitarist Sierra Scott and drummer Virginia Pettis. Satisfied with the emerging chemistry, the quartet began composing material collectively and securing local gigs. Their initial release, the EP Tiny Hats, came out on Economy Music in 2017.
Hardly Art subsequently issued the follow-up EP Fashion Conman in 2019. During this period the members forged closer ties through shared personal hardships and a mutual sense of exclusion from mainstream norms. Those experiences were redirected into the full-length Androgynous Mary, issued by Hardly Art in 2020.
