Formed as a vocal quartet in 1958, The Golden Boys brought together brothers Roberto Correia José Maria, Ronaldo Correia José Maria, and Renato Correia José Maria—siblings of the Trio Esperança members—plus their cousin Valdir Anunciação. Their first LP that year included the hit “Meu Romance com Laura,” after which they embarked on national tours that filled out the rest of the decade. During the 1960s they spent two months performing in Uruguay while also releasing multiple albums that produced the successes “Michelle,” “Se Eu Fosse Você,” “Andança,” “Mágoa,” “Pensando Nela,” and “O Cabeção,” among others. Further travels carried them through the U.S., Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, and additional countries. In 1971 Renato turned to production and exited, leaving the group a trio. The brothers, writing separately or jointly, supplied several hits for other artists, among them Roberto Carlos’s “É Papo Firme” and “Não Precisas Chorar” plus Evinha’s “Casaco Marrom.” Renato likewise supplied the soundtrack to the film Juventude e Ternura, which starred Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa.
