Formed initially for local gatherings in Rio de Janeiro's Piedade borough, Renato e Seus Blue Caps rose to prominence as one of the Jovem Guarda's leading ensembles. The moment aligned with the nascent youth-music market, placing the band in an opportune position. Broadcasts on Rádio Mayrink Veiga followed soon after. Carlos Imperial, presenter of the program Os Brotos Comandam on TV Rio, extended an invitation as their popularity grew. Their debut single "Vera Lúcia" (Renato Barros/Paulo Barros) was recorded in 1962 and registered as their first hit. The inaugural LP Viva a Juventude arrived in 1965 and contained the further success "Menina Linda," Renato's version of Lennon/McCartney's "I Should Have Known Better." Several appearances on the Jovem Guarda television show, hosted by Roberto Carlos with Erasmo Carlos (who later joined the group temporarily) and Wanderléa, ensued. Additional hits included "Até o Fim," Lilian Knapp's version of "You Won't See Me" by Lennon/McCartney, and "Escândalo," Renato Barros's version of "Shame and Scandal in the Family" by Donaldson/Brown. Performances at club dances across Brazil continued after the Jovem Guarda concluded.
