Golden Gate Quartet

Emerging from Virginia during the 1930s and 1940s, the Golden Gate Quartet pioneered a fresh style of sacred music they termed “jubilee” singing. Driven by the contributions of Willie Johnson and William Langford, the ensemble quickly attracted widespread audiences well beyond church settings. Their polished vocal blend, shaped by the Mills Brothers’ example, positioned the group for ready entry into mainstream pop, prompting their first sessions for Victor in 1937. Widespread network radio exposure together with their participation in John Hammond’s 1938 “Spirituals to Swing” program at Carnegie Hall established nationwide popularity. By 1941 the quartet had moved to Columbia after Langford’s departure, and cinematic appearances multiplied in films such as Star Spangled Rhythm, Hollywood Canteen, and Hit Parade of 1943. Late-decade attempts to incorporate R&B repertoire proved unsuccessful, and Johnson left for the Jubilaires in 1948. The ensemble relocated to France in 1959; under the leadership of longtime bass vocalist Orlando Wilson, its distinctive vocal blend remains undiminished.
