Biography
From her tenure with the Caravans in the closing years of the 1950s onward, Inez Andrews ranked among the premier gospel vocalists thanks to her commanding contralto. Don Robey originated her “Songbird” nickname upon launching a gospel imprint beneath his Backbeat/Peacock enterprise, and she counted among the first artists he recruited to that roster. Subsequent recordings appeared on Savoy and Spirit Feel. Shine on Me, issued by MCA in 1991, marked her final album. A 1999 compilation titled Headline News gathered highlights from her strongest solo material of the 1970s. Inez Andrews passed away in Chicago during December 2012 at age 83.
