Biography
Albertina Walker came into the world as the youngest member of a family of nine on August 29, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois. She spent her formative years on the city’s south side and first lifted her voice in song while still a child at Westpoint Baptist Church, where visiting gospel luminaries such as the Roberta Martin Singers, Sadie Durham, and Professor Fyre frequently appeared. Early on she lent her talents to several ensembles, among them the Pete Williams Singers, the Willie Webb Singers, and the Robert Anderson Singers, before establishing the Caravans in 1951. The original roster also featured Ora Lee Hopkins, Elyse Yancey, and Nellie Grace Daniels. Between 1952 and 1954 the group cut enduring sides for the States label, including “Mary Don’t You Weep,” “Soldiers in the Army,” “The Solid Rock,” “The Lord I’ll Keep Me Day By Day,” “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power,” and “Blessed Assurance.” Walker later revisited the latter song for the soundtrack of Steve Martin’s film Leap of Faith, in which she also made a brief on-screen appearance.
Widely regarded as an unmatched springboard for gospel talent, the Caravans counted among their alumni Shirley Caesar, Inez Andrews, Bessie Griffin, Dorothy Norwood, Cassietta George, and James Cleveland, each of whom later achieved solo prominence. Carrying forward that legacy, Walker founded the Albertina Walker Foundation for the Creative Arts to award scholarships to aspiring gospel performers. In 1955 the ensemble moved to Savoy Records. Notably, the 1966 lineup included a teenage Loleatta Holloway, who would later emerge as a leading disco vocalist. By 1956 the Caravans stood among the most celebrated acts on the gospel circuit, their reputation resting on an otherworldly vocal blend and a rotating array of powerful lead singers. At the height of their popularity in 1962 they joined pioneering Chicago imprint Vee-Jay and issued the album Seek Ye the Lord. Additional successes on the label included Walk Around Heaven All Day and To Whom Shall I Turn. The group formally dissolved in the mid-1970s, although occasional reunion engagements continued.
During the 1970s Walker returned to Savoy and delivered albums such as Please Be Patient With Me—her first Grammy-nominated project—I Can Go to God In Prayer, Spread the Word, and I Won’t Last a Day Without You. In the following decade she recorded for Word/Epic, releasing Let Jesus Come Into Your Heart, I Will Wait on You, and Joy Will Come In the Morning. By then she had accumulated eleven Grammy nominations. In 1995 she received the Grammy for Best Traditional Gospel Album for Songs of the Church. That same year she joined Phoebe Snow, Thelma Houston, CeCe Peniston, and Lois Walden in the collective Sisters of Glory, which issued the album Good News In Hard Times on LLF/Warner Bros. Records. Her distinctive voice also illuminated Thomas A. Dorsey’s “Precious Lord” and Dorothy Love Coates’ “He’s Right on Time.” In 1997 she earned a Dove Award for Traditional Gospel Album of the Year with the Grammy-nominated Let’s Go Back—Live in Chicago. Released that summer, I’m Still Here on BMG/Zomba/Verity added another strong entry to a discography exceeding forty albums; among its highlights were the title song, “Sanctify Me (I’m Available),” “Lord I Want to Thank You,” and a jazz-inflected orchestral treatment of “The Impossible Dream.” Entering the new century, Albertina Walker contributed guest appearances to projects by Kurt Carr, the Gospel Music Workshop of America, and the National Baptist Convention.
