Biography
John P. Kee stands among the foremost figures in contemporary gospel as both a leading vocalist and the pastor of New Life Fellowship Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Drawing inspiration from the Reverend Dr. James Cleveland, he rose above earlier struggles with substance abuse and criminal activity to establish himself in the late 1980s as a commanding singer and minister. Albums recorded either under his own name or with the New Life Community Choir, among them Colorblind in 1994, The Legacy Project in 2011, and Level Next in 2015, have placed him among the most successful gospel artists of his era, routinely reaching the upper ranks of Billboard’s gospel chart.
Born John Prince Kee in 1962 in Durham, North Carolina, he was the fifteenth of sixteen siblings. His musical gifts surfaced early, prompting his parents to enroll him at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, where he organized his first choir at age thirteen. After relocating to California he studied with his older brothers Al and Wayne at the Yuba College Conservatory School of Music in Marysville and worked alongside leading local players; brief stints with the Blackbyrds and Cameo also occurred during this period. Despite these opportunities, his late teens were marked by street involvement that carried him back and forth between California and North Carolina. Upon returning to his home state he settled in Charlotte’s Double Oaks neighborhood and descended further into narcotics and violence.
In his early twenties Kee experienced a decisive shift after witnessing a friend’s murder during a failed cocaine transaction. Following a surrender to faith at a PTL revival, he aligned himself with New Life Fellowship Church and dedicated his efforts to gospel music, forming the New Life Community Choir. His initial major opportunity arrived in 1985 when he became the first singer invited to perform lead vocals on two selections for the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s yearly mass-choir project. The choir’s debut recording, Yes Lord, appeared in 1987, captured live at the Brethren in Unity Youth Convention, and his first solo effort, Wait on Him, followed in 1989.
Throughout the ensuing decade Kee alternated between individual releases and choir projects while accumulating honors that included more than a dozen Stellar Awards, twenty GMWA Excellence Awards, a Soul Train Award, and two Billboard Music Awards. Commercial success peaked in 1995 with the gold-certified Show Up, recorded with the New Life Community Choir and nominated for a Grammy; his 1999 album Strength received a similar nomination. During the same period he assumed full-time pastoral duties at New Life Community Church, maintaining this role alongside his recording career. He also produced projects for the Victory in Praise Mass Choir, Shawn McClemore and New Image, and Drea Randle.
In subsequent years Kee returned regularly to the studio with the choir, issuing Not Guilty...The Experience in 2000, Blessed by Association in 2002, and Life & Favor in 2012. These works blended fervent praise-and-worship elements with contemporary R&B and hip-hop textures to convey themes of redemption through Christ. The solo album Level Next, released in 2015 on Motown Gospel as his twenty-fifth project overall, reached number four on the Billboard gospel chart. I Made It Out arrived in 2019 and earned a GMA Dove Award nomination.
